Patience

Manny Harris and Deshawn Sims led the Michigan Wolverines to a 15 point win today at Crisler Arena against the Hawks. Michigan controlled the game from the tip and never looked back. The Hawkeyes were lead by freshman Matt Gatens who had 11 points. Once Iowa got down early they could not find a way to score aganist John Beliens 1-3-1 press. Iowa had 18 turnovers and shot 39% from the field while Michigan only turned it over 11 times and shot 42% from the field.

Anthony Tucker looks to be a bit more healthy. He scored 8 points and logged 11 minutes. Jarryd Cole also scored 8 points filling in for the injured Cyrus Tate. Jeff Peterson logged 34 mins scoring only 4 points and turning the ball over 5 times.

If you are an Iowa fan, you have to feel awfully frustrated watching today's game. Iowa seemed overmatched, outhustled, and outcoached. Michigan is no doubt the better team, but I expected a better effort from our guys today. Michigan got every offensive rebound and ever loose ball. Iowa didn't play with any fire out there today.

One thing is for sure, in order for Iowa to have success they are going to need a healthy Anthony Tucker and Cyrus Tate.

Hopefully some people will read this blog. I will have some recruiting stuff on here and some other thoughts. I think Lickliter has this program going in the right direction, lets just be a little patient! Go Hawks!

  1. Phelps, even though I know you and Gordon are the 2 craziest fans of Iowa bball, don't have any expectations for this season. Iowa bball is still 2 years away from competing for a NCAA tourney birth. I can't see this team finishing any better than 7-11 in the big ten.

There are 2 problems with this team.

The offense is terrible, specifically the man to man offense, it's basically just screening for the ball constantly and there's very little movement. How about picking away from the ball? That might loosen up the defense a little bit.

Lick also doesn't have the players to compete with other top teams in the big ten. Jeff Peterson is a backup point guard on a good team, and Jake Kelly is a 3rd or 4th option on a good team, not a 1st or 2nd. Let's hope Lick can get some better recruits than Brandon Cowgill!

  2. The offense will get better when we get the guys we need to run the offense effectively.

My issue with this team is defense and rebounding. We are not attacking the glass and not going after loose balls. We obviously are not as talented as other big ten teams, and we could overcome alot of that with smarts and hustle. It just isn't happening right now.

  3. I was a little disappointed with the hustle also. The problem is, I have seen it. There are times when we look like we have the fire to compete with anyone, then we get tentative. I chalk it up to inexperience, which leads to frustration. I also think that rebounds are going to be an issue simply because the offense does not put people in great rebounding position. This is not necessarily a criticism because I think that good shot selection and good shooting can go a long ways towards negating less than stellar rebounding.
